Summer is prime time for soccer — neighborhood games, pickup matches with friends, even full-on tournaments that often take place under the blazing midday sun. Kids are out there giving it everything they've got, totally locked into the game — and often not realizing just how hot it’s getting.
That’s why staying properly hydrated isn’t just helpful — it’s essential.
Most of us parents have heard this before, but during summer, it’s worth repeating. A few small habits can make a big difference.
Here’s what to keep in mind:
💧 Don’t wait for your child to say they’re thirsty. By that point, they’re already starting to dehydrate. Encourage them to drink water regularly — before, during, and after playing.
💧 Cool water is best — but skip the ice-cold stuff. When kids are hot from running around, super cold water can upset their stomachs or even cause mild shock to the system.
💧 Avoid sodas and sugary drinks. They might seem refreshing, but they actually do more harm than good. The sugar gives a short burst of energy followed by a crash, and those drinks don’t hydrate well. In fact, they can make kids feel even thirstier and more tired.
💧 A quick splash of water on the head or neck can help cool things down — just make sure it’s not freezing cold.
Hydration for kids in summer soccer isn't just a checklist item — it’s a game-changing habit. Helping your child stay cool and properly fueled through water — not sugar or soda — will keep their energy high, their focus sharp, and their love for the game stronger than ever.
